After Celie's abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing "Mister" Albert Johnson (Danny Glover), things go from bad to worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can. She perseveres, holding on to her dream of one day being reunited with her sister in Africa. Based on the novel by Alice Walker. - **Celie's Blues** (1:05:15–1:08:10): Shug singing Celie's Blues at Hambo's. - **Shug & Celie Kiss** (1:12:17/1:15:00-1:18:50): Celie and Shug play dress up and make out. - Both Celie and Shug are alienated from traditional gender roles (partially un-gendered) in different ways. Celie is refused the romantic aspects of (white femininity), reduced to the bare concept of domesticity. Her husband does not love her, or treat her with kindness, protect her, etc. All he does is provide, so that their relationship is merely reproductive. - Where does Blackness fit in as specifying this dynamic in terms of race? Surely a white woman may be romantically alienated from their husband too. Difference between rich white and poor white gender roles. - **Dinner Roast**: Final scene at the dinner where Celie roasts her abusive husband. - Lots of scenes of Black men being bad to black women.
