# Analogue Linking
- Citations are a form of authorial interlinking that predates writing.
- Textual citations are primarily used for inter-authorial references (e.g. quotations, reference notes, renvois). 
- But intra-authorial references have been used consistently as well (e.g. references to an author's previous or forthcoming works, page references, indexes and tables of contents)
